Piet Hein Eek Pop Up Shop
September - October 2008
Rabih Hage is launching his first pop-up store with the highly acclaimed Dutch designer-producer, Piet Hein Eek.
The pop-up shop will be based on South Kensington’s Exhibition Road as part of the Brompton Design District. It will operate from the 18th September to 30 of October; coinciding with the London Design Festival, which runs from 13-23 September 2008.
The pop-up shop will be Piet’s biggest showcase to date. It will house many pieces from the vast and ever-growing collection that he produces in his own workshop in Geldrop near Eindhoven.
This means that pieces like his classic Scrapwood Cupboard, first launched 16 years ago, will sit alongside newer designs such as the Sheet Cupboard, which made its debut at 2007’s Milan Salone del Mobile.
Rabih discovered Piet four years ago, and the exhibition at the Rabih Hage Gallery that followed was the designer’s first solo exhibition outside The Netherlands.
“Piet takes very simple understated materials and turns them into intelligent and distinguished designs with beauty and functionality,” says Rabih, “he gives cheap materials like plywood a noble destiny.”
Piet explains his thinking: “It’s nice when I see a quality in a material that no one else sees. And it’s even better if it’s an ugly material.”
In parallel with the pop-up store, Piet’s original design drawings will be on show at the Rabih Hage Gallery. “We want explain the road to the design,” says Piet. “We produce ourselves, so the designs are created and engineered specifically for our own way of doing things.”
