Janette Laverrière

London, England

November - December 2004

Janette Laverrière’s vibrant pieces could be the work of the contemporary designer as they all embody clever indications of their ambiguous functionality without losing sight of joie de vivre. Due to her strong political ethos, Laverrière’s ideal was ‘design for all’ and she wished to have her designs mass-produced but was regularly refused by conventionally-minded manufacturers and therefore produced only one- or two-of-a-kind pieces.

Because of its limited initial production, over the decades her work has become eminently collectable.

Perimeter Editions, a furniture and design house established by Pascale Revert, is re-issuing six of Laverrière’s furniture creations that represent her exceptional career. The pieces will be shown at the Rabih Hage showroom for the first time in the UK. The ‘Noir et Blanc’ table was originally commissioned for a small dining room, and had to serve that function whilst vying for space. Made from plywood, laminate, stainless steel (or lacquered metal), it is evocative of a surfboard and folds into a discreet console. The desk ‘Architecte’ was conceived for a bedroom. The slip pockets on each side allow easy organisation of papers that would otherwise clutter the solid-wood surface. Perimeter Editions is re-editing it as the original and has also interpreted it, in collaboration with Janette Laverrière, as a modern coffee table.

Laverrière’s original mirrors will also be exhibited by Rabih Hage who will re-issue up to five reproductions per design by commission.

The Laverrière exhibition at Rabih Hage also marks the launch of a monograph on her work by Yves Badetz, published by Editions Norma.
